Hi,

My name is Roberta Chmiel-Thomas. I had no idea there were so many Chmiel's out there. Yes, I got teased alot with the Laverne and Shirley song too. My fathers name was Joseph Chmiel II and his father of course, was Joseph Chmiel and he was married to Estelle. In looking at the family tree,  my great granfathers name was Peter and his wife was Margaret. Both born about 1885 in Galicia. They had 6 boys: John, Stanislaw, Walter, Joseph (my grandfather), Ben and Theodore. I couldn't get back any further than that. My fathers brothers and sisters were: Diane, Kenneth, Delores and Ronald. We lived in central New Jersey.
It was great reading all the posts!
I'll be checking in for any other new Chmiels that find the site, probably by accident as I did.

My name is Dennis Chmiel, I was born Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised in Muskego, Wi,  a small farming community just West of Milwaukee.  I currently live in Aiken, South Carolina.  Most of my family still lives in  Wisconsin, with some others in Georgia, and Arizona.

 My Grandfather, Andrew Chmiel immigrated from Poland to Milwaukee in 1907 from Demba, Poland (near Lublin).  He later sent for this Brother George, and his wife, Mary.    

 I have visited Poland several times in the past 8 years visiting Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Lublin, and have stopped in the Village of Chmiel, just south of Lublin.  Check it out on Google Earth.

Hop is the name of plant and Hops is used to name the female flower clusters (see WIkipedia).

Questions (academic) are:

1. the photo shows only one cluster; is it hope or hops?

2. one plant is hop; but more plant are  hops?

3. my name is Hop; but you and me are Hops?

It is some kind of language joke or the serious grammar question perhaps.

Now about history of the name Chmiel. It is clear that it is originated from the plant name chmiel, however where it was introduced at first?

Czech and Slovak have the name Chmel.

The question is: which name was the first?

I will try to find the answer, if will be possible?

It should be nice to activate other visitors in this topic.

Im very excited to see this site and to know tat so many Chmiels  are dispersed through the world.

My name is Aleksander Chmiel. Im from Poland where the name Chmiel is popular in the southern part of the country. Originally this name was born in the central Europe - presently Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia (alphabetically), where chmiel (= hop,  hopfen, Humulus lupulus) was/is cultivated for beer production for centuries). Then Chmiels gone on West and East', probably to Germany and USA at first.

I was born in Janow Lubelski (SE of Poland) but since many years Im living in Lodz (central Poland) having very nice job as the professor of pharmaceutical biotechnology at the Medical University. Coming closer to retire I started some activity in the nature photography, photoclose-up/macro especially. You are invited to see my pictures on:

Hello,  My great grandmother was a Chmiel.  She married Jozef Moculak (Moczulski) (Maczulak).  There have been many spellings for the surname Moculak or Moculski as is my maiden name.  Julia brought over a daughter (?) named Wladislawa (Lottie) Karolak, who married Thomas Frankowski on/or about February 02, 1904 in Poland.  All sounds very confusing, but I have found this to be as such.  Trying to do some research on Julia and my great grandfather Jozef, can anyone help me out?

Hello from a Chmiel in Wisconsin.  My Dad (a Chmiel) grew up next door to another Chmiel family in Milwaukee.  For a long time, these were the only two Chmiel families in Milwaukee...at least in the phone book.  However, they were not related.  Strange but true.  Unfortunately, my Dad's father died early and my Dad never had a chance to hear about his Chmiel family background. 

Long live the Chmiel line...but its up to everyone else...no kids and I'm too old !

I was Born a chmiel in England, daughter of a polish refugee fleeing the germans in 1939 from Krakow Poland who joined the RAF here in England stayed married and had 4 children ! He returned frequently to visit family who have now all died

You have a very nice site. My father and his family came to the United States in the early 1900's. I don't know too much about them. My grandfather's name was Michael and grandmother's was Katheryn. It is my understanding that they came from Warsaw. My father Walter was one of four children. The others were Edward, Mary and Joseph. My father married Pauline Moskalik and had six children Leona, Walter, Phillip, Julianna, Stephanie and myself. Edward married Anna Moskalik and had two children Sandra (died very young) and Edward. Joesph died early. I believe it was in World War II. I am not sure how may children Mary had. I believe three. She lived in New York and as a child I only seen several times. I have two children a girl and boy and five grandchildren. My sister Leona has one son, as does Julie and Stephanie. Walter has a son and daughter and Phillip has three sons. It would be interesting to see if we are related. I did not know there were so many Chmiel. I go to Ohio all the time and even Dayton. I have not seen the store. I will have to check it out the next time I go. Merry Christmas and have a great holiday.

Hi, I'm another Chmiel who grew up thinking there were no other Chmiel's in this world. What a surprise to find people all over the world with the same last name. My thanks to the developer of this website. My parents Joseph and Antonina emigrated to Canada in 1939 and first lived in northern Alberta (Berwyn) as homesteaders. My father was born in 1900 and my mother in 1901.While living in Poland they farmed the small portion of land they owned. They originally came from an area of Poland near Zamosc (a village called Bodaczow). My mother whose maiden name was Srala came from a large family 6 or 7 brother and sisters. My father had one brother (Marek).Three of my older brothers and my older sister were all born in Poland. I have one brother a few years older than myself who was born in Alberta while I was born in Ontario, Canada. All of my older siblings earned their living for most of their lives as farmers, growing tobacco in Ontario Canada. Only my one brother just older than myself and myself were fortunate enough to get a higher education attending University. I still have second cousins living in the Bodaczow area of Poland. They live in the log house my father built when my parents were first married. I had the opportunity about 12 years ago to go to Poland to meet some of my cousins I had never met before. It was quite incredible to see genetics at work. I met a second cousin who could have passed for a twin to one of my nieces in Canada. It was quite remarkable. I encourage any Chmiel that still has some roots in Poland to visit the area your family came from. It's an incredibly exciting and emotional experience.

Hi ! I'm French, living in Austria, Vienna. I just start some research on my family, coming (like us all ?) from Poland, Silesia. Mein grandfather was Rudolf Chmiel born in 1914 in Bielitz. His father was Paul Chmiel born 21 JAN 1875 in Perstetz near Skotschau, Austria. The grandfather of Rudolf was Adam Chmiel born in Lipnik. My grandfather (Rudolf) moved to France after WWII, an other part of his family (his sister Matilde born CHMIEL and her husband) moved to America, California. My mother Carmen Chmiel is born in France in 1951, so do I the 21.08.1977. I choose to conserve the name "Chmiel" because it is related with a lot of family history (my father is a pure French...). If you know something about these people, please let me know ! I'm also looking for information about the first wife of Viktor Chmiel born in Bielitz the 19 April 1912, he was the brother of Rudolf. I think this wife had a daughter (Edith ?). She's maybe living in Austria, about 60 years old, but she's not wearing the name Chmiel anymore. Does somebody know something ?

I just found this site and I am thrilled. I am utterly ignorant of my roots. My grandfather (Joseph) came over from Poland in the late 1940's and settled in Niagara Falls, NY. Hi! I have just started looking into my family history and love any informaition on the Chmiel's that anyone has. My grandfather's name was Stanely Chmiel, and his father's name was Ludwig, and his mother's was Kathyrn.(sp?) They both came over from Poland in the early 1900's. I believe Ludwig came over in 1910. Hi: I believe that the original name was Chmielowiec. It means that " one that works with hops". I understand that in the 17 th century, when surnames were assigned, they randomly came down the trails and assigned names based on what they they saw. This was so fun to read through! My brother is a purist and wants the name pronouned the way it "ought" to be in Polish (H-miel). I, on the other hand, am a teacher and don't want to deal with the pronounciation struggles, so I just go with Sh-meal. I do, however, wish I came up with the "Camille" pronouncation earlier. It would prevent all those times people want to stick an "S" in the begining of my name!

We are looking for members of our family who have moved to canada during the 1940's (we think) . My father was born Aleksander Chmiel in Lukow,Poland on the 3rd of October 1917. He came to australia around the time of the 1950's. We believe his parents are Karol and Katarzyna but are not sure due to a indefinite family tree. Interesting to see lots of Chmiels scattered around the world. We live in Australia and have Polish heritage - both our parents migrated to Australia as displaced persons after WWII. George's father (now deceased, name of Stefan) came from a village called Borek Wielki, near Tarnow in S.E. Poland. The name means "hops" in Polish (as used in the brewing of beer), and also appears in the Czech language. Other Slavonic languages have variations in the spelling such as Hmiel and Chmel. We live in Sydney (Australia) and get lots of strange pronunciations from Anglo Saxon speakers who cannot get their tongues around the name (but that is true of most Polish names). Hi I was so happy to find a Chmiel family web page where us Chmiels can find each other. I am pretty sure that all our ancestors come from the same region - eastern Poland. Although the name is certainly not a noble family name, and we cannot count on finding a family coat-of-arms it would be very interesting if we could find connections between our families. I know that there is no one ancestor because the name meaning "hops" is very popular in the region, but we still can look for family nests isolating several individual family trees, and maybe find relatives on the web. Maybe this page could be a message board where every Chmiel could leave every available data about his/her ancestors for the benefit of everyone looking for relatives. This would be much better solution than mailing everyone who leaves e-mail adress here. Tose data could be left here by filling a specially designed form which would not be difficult to make. I hope such message board will soon appear on the Chmiel family page. And as for me I am a last year law student living in Lublin, Poland. My family nest is Szczebrzeszyn (I know, it is a tounge-twister) near Zamosc.

Wow, I had no idea the Chmiel family was so extensive! My family lives in the Pittsburgh, PA area. My grandfather John Chmiel had four sons -- John from Pennsylvania just passed away; Ed lives in Florida; Jim lives in Pennsylvania; and Tom lives in Michigan. Needless to say, there are plenty of relatives that come from all of those Chmiels.

Many years ago we had a study done of the name. We learned that "Chmiel" translates to "hops," as in the grain ingredient in beer. Yup, that sounds about right!

Hello again, I was always told the correct way to prononce the name was (Hmiel). My Grandfather, Jakob Chmiel had a bother named Jan (John). When he came to the U.S. he changed his last name to Chmielewski. I believe both bothers spent some time in Cleveland, with other relatives(Staszelak) before moving to Jackson, Michigan in or about 1907. They had a sister named Magdalena (Chmiel) Fajkierz. She died in Krynki, Poland close to Starachowice. She had two sons, one was Wladyslaw, who lived and died in poland. Another (Don't know his name) moved to France, probably in the late 1930's or early 40's. If anyone Knows of any Chmiels' in France that might fit this description, please let me know.
